Water Treatment Facility as a Drinking Water Source

Holiday Trash Collection Schedule
Trash, recycling and greenwaste will be collected as regularly
scheduled except for the following holidays:
• New Year’s Day
• Memorial Day
• Labor Day
• Fourth of July
• Thanksgiving Day
• Christmas Day
Whenever one of these holidays
occurs, the collection schedule will be delayed one day for
the remainder of the week. For example, since Thanksgiving
falls on Thursday, the collection day would be moved to Friday
and the collection normally made on Friday would be on Saturday.
The final collection for the week would be on Saturday.
Water and trash bills can be
paid via U.S. mail, dropped in the blue drop-off box in front
of City Hall (13230 Penn Street) or paid in person at City
Hall. We accept payment by cash, check, debit or credit cards
(Visa/MC only) if you pay in person. Public Works Customer
Service Division can answer most of your questions about your
service, and provide copies of your bills, please call (562)

Electronic Waste
The City now collects electronics
from Whittier residents to insure proper disposal and/or recycling.
The program includes all electronics, including computer monitors,
televisions, stereos, VCRs, laptops, fax machines, scanners,
printers, keyboards, microwaves, etc. Please call your refuse
hauler for more information or to arrange a pick-up.

Landfill
Savage Canyon Landfill is open
to residents and business owners located in the City of Whittier.
Savage Canyon Landfill only accepts waste generated from the
City of Whittier and its contract haulers. Whittier residents
must provide proof of residency with either a valid California
Identification or a recent utility bill. Please contact the
landfill gate house at (562) 698-1223 or the Landfill Office
at (562) 907-7750 for more information.
Operation:
The hours of operation are
7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Saturday except holidays.
The landfill is closd on the following holidays: New Years
Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving
and Christmas Day. The landfill may be subject to closure
to the public on rainy days. Due to permit tonnage limitations,
the landfill may close early on additional days if necessary.

Savage Canyon Landfill does
not accept any of the following: green waste, hazardous
materials, appliances, tires, liquid waste, pesticides,
herbicides, automotive products, paints, solvents, acids,
caustics, batteries, electronic waste, CRTs, explosives
(ammunition), compressed gas cylinders, contaminated soil
and radioactive waste. If you have any questions regarding
types of material that can be disposd at the landfill, please
contact the landfill gate house at (562) 698-1223 for more
information.
Savage Canyon Landfill
Rates:
- Trash - $38.00/ton
- Inert - $43.85/ton (dirt, asphalt, rocks, concrete)
- Hard to Handle - $53.90/ton (any waste that would require
additional landfilling process i.e. large pieces of concrete,
stumps)
Savage Canyon Landfill accepts
clean fill dirt for free. Dirt loads are accepted during
the hours of 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. To obtain more detailed
information on the landfills for accepting clean fill dirt,
call the landfill directly at (562) 698-1223.
Roll-off Container Rental
Container rentals are available
through the City or its authorized haulers only. Four sizes
are available, all roll-off containers are 8’ wide x
20’ long externally and 7’, 4” wide x 19’,
6” long internally. Call Public Works Customer Service
at (562) 464-3530 or (562) 464-3540 for information on rental
rates and delivery options.
10 cubic yards, 2’ in
height (use for concrete and dirt only)
20 cubic yards, 4’ in height
25 cubic yards, 5’ in height
30 cubic yards, 6’ in height
You can also rent a 2-cubic
yard bin for smaller household projects for two dumps or two
weeks, whichever comes first. Additional charges apply for
extra dumps. Construction materials are not accepted in these
smaller bins due to weight limits, roll-off containers should

Saturday Residential
Discount
Special Saturday Residential
Discounts, with proper I.D. showing a Whittier residential
address, entitles you to one dump per Saturday up to a 3/4
ton pick-up truck. A nominal payment is made at the Landfill
Gatehouse upon entering. Call (562) 698-1223 for fees charged.
Extra Service Needed?
Up to five bundles of brush
may be scheduled as a free bulky item collection on your refuse
day. Do not place extra greenwaste in trash bags and set them
beside the containers, they will not be recycled.Call your
recycler to request additional containers or a special collection.
Extra Refuse
All refuse must be in an automated
container. For occasional extra refuse, call your service
provider for a special collection. Charges apply and vary
depending on quantity and type of items. Residents may purchase
“Refuse Overflow” tags for $2.00 for each bag
of refuse in City Hall in the Department of Public Works.
For collection of large quantities or unusual items, the Solid
Waste Supervisor will provide a quote. A minimum charge applies.
Whittier residents may request up to four (4) free pick-ups
annually of oversized or overweight household articles such
as furniture and/or appliances. There is a limit of two items
per collection. Please call your refuse service provider to
schedule a collection.
Containers
Obtaining Refuse/Recycling Containers
Call your service provider at the telephone number provided
under Customer Service. The basic service level includes providing
each single family resident with a 96-gallon green container
for greenwaste, a 96-gallon blue container for co-mingled
recycling, and a 64-gallon black container for refuse. Residents
may request up to three extra green and/or blue containers
free of charge. There is a monthly charge for extra black
refuse containers. Click here to see what

Placement of Containers
- Place containers in the street or on the parkway with
lids closed or in the alley on one side only where the large
black alley containers are/were placed.
- Wheels must be against the curb.Front of container should
face the street or alley if you are serviced in an alley.
- Place container a minimum of 3 feet from obstructions
and other containers to allow for automated collection.
- Place all containers out for collection by 6:00 a.m. on
your regular refuse day.
Removal of Containers
Please remove all containers
(refuse and recycling) from the curb and alley once they are
emptied. All containers (except the large 300-gallon alley
containers) must be removed from the public right-of-way and
stored on a customer’s private property. They must also
be out of public view from the front and sides of property.
According to Municipal Code Section 8.12.132, residents may
request a “Refuse Container Permit” for those
serviced in an alley who cannot place their containers on
