The
City of Whittier has received notice from our federal
representatives of federal funds that have been designated
for Whittier projects. Congressman Gary Miller has secured
$2 million for the Whittier Greenway Trail, the bicycle
and pedestrian pathway to be built along the old railroad
right-of-way. He also designated about $13,000 for Whittier’s
share of a regional study of traffic surrounding the 91
and 605 Freeways.
Congresswoman Linda Sanchez has secured $1.136 million
for improvements to Whittier Boulevard between Five Points
and Philadelphia. The improvements will front the new
development at Leggett and Platt, the now-closed Nelles
School, and the Rasmussen Iron Works site. Improvements
will include an innovative drainage system to allow storm
water to percolate into the ground water system before
draining the remainder into the traditional storm drain
system.
Congresswoman Sanchez also recently announced an appropriation
of $220,000 for children's after school programs at Club
Dexter and the Library's Homework Center. Providing positive
programs for young teens is a City Council priority as
part of the City's anti-graffiti efforts, and these programs
will entertain, educate, and engage students in our community.
She has previously secured $225,00 for these programs.
Thank you to Congressman Miller and Congresswoman Sanchez
for watching out for the interests of the Whittier community
as they work for us in Washington, DC.
