RECREATION CLASS REGISTRATION
GOES ON-LINE IN MARCH
The Recreation Division of the Community Services Department
has achieved a long-desired goal with the inauguration
of on-line class registration for the Spring 2010 class
season.
Beginning March 8, you will be able to sign up for Recreation
classes and workshops on-line. All you need is a computer,
a Recreation PIN number and a Visa or Mastercard to make
payment.
To be prepared for the new on-line class registration
service, please call or come by the Community Center to
receive your PIN number so you will be ready to go in
March. This will allow you to register quickly and easily
24 hours a day, seven days a week, by logging onto WhittierRec.com.
On-line registration also has the added benefit of a
“green” way to register for classes; as everything
is done via computer, on-line registration will not generate
any paper waste.
Please note that effective with the Spring 2010 class
season, telephone and fax registrations WILL NO LONGER
be accepted. In-person class registrations may still be
made at the Community Center, Palm Park, Parnell Park
and the Uptown Senior Center, or by mail.
The on-line registration website became available for
viewing only on February 8. Actual on-line registrations
will not begin until March 8, 2010.
If you have any questions about Whittier’s new
on-line registration program, please call the Whittier
Community Center at 562-464-3430.
“ACTIVATE
WHITTIER” WELLNESS KICK-OFF JANUARY 16, 2010
Working
together to build a healthy community is the goal of the
new “Activate Whittier” program. “Activate
Whittier” will have its official program and website
launch – www.ActivateWhittier.org
– at 10 a.m. on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at Parnell
Park, 15390 Lambert Road.
At
the kick-off event, the “Activate Whittier”
website will be introduced and demonstrated to the community.
There will be fitness demonstrations, a circuit course around
the park and healthy snacks. Those attending will receive
small fitness-related gifts of a pedometer and informational
magnet. In addition, there will be fitness activities geared
to children and youth, including a rock climb and obstacle
course.
A
key component of “Activate Whittier” is a “living
website”, available for anyone in the community to
log onto, join and become active. It is available for individuals,
groups, schools and corporations. The site allows individual
and group participants to track their activity, nutrition,
weight and hydration as well as competing with others for
motivation.
There
are activities and competitions to earn points and receive
recognition and prizes for health and fitness efforts. “Activate
Whittier” also provides links to other sites for health
and wellness information, events and more. It can be changed
and updated for special events and activities, such as “Breast
Cancer Awareness Month.”
The
mission of “Activate Whittier” is to motivate
and support a healthy community through wellness education
and physical activity. The vision is to develop a “Healthy
Community Partnership” putting Whittier in the forefront
of the nation in promoting health education and physical
education.
Current
partners in “Activate Whittier” are the City
of Whittier, YMCA of Greater Whittier, Presbyterian Intercommunity
Hospital and the County of Los Angeles, Public Health Department.
Summer
Concerts in the Park
Spend warm summer evenings at the park listening to fabulous
live music! This is a great Whittier tradition for summertime!
Monday evenings, beginning at 7 p.m., bands will entertain
audiences at Whittier’s Central Park, located on the
corner of Bailey Street and Washington Avenue. On Thursday,
evenings entertainment will be provided at Parnell Park,
located at the corner of Scott Avenue and Lambert Road.
The concerts are sponsored by the Whittier Cultural Arts
and Parks and Recreation Commissions. Click
here to view the concert schedule.
Founders’
Day
Held the third Saturday in May, Whittier celebrates Founders’
Day. The festivities begin with a parade in front of City
Hall that travels to Central Park in Uptown Whittier. Once
at Central Park, there are performances from talented youth
groups and exhibits from the Native American, Mexican and
Quaker groups who resided in the Whittier area over 100
years ago. Demonstrations and crafts from the era of Whittier’s
founding explore daily life, culture and customs. Lace making,
quilt construction, Indian face and rock painting will fascinate
young and old alike.
